Course Overview
English 12 CP
English 12 College Prep
This course provides students with challenging reading, writing and thinking experiences. The design, materials, and approaches for this course enable students to establish a mindset that anticipates the intellectual sophistication necessary for success beyond high school. Students receive instruction and practice in the workshop model. Students will analyze literature from diverse authors. In order to develop writing skills, students will focus on literary analysis, narrative and persuasive writing techniques. Students will be required to write a research paper reinforcing MLA format. Students will analyze the study of literary genres such as the memoir, existentialism, drama, and nonfictional works of literature as they develop their critical thinking skills in a culminating project.
Current Unit: Memoir Book Club. Students will individually read a memoir of their choice to identify particular types of literary devices and inform their personal narrative/college application essay.

This course continues to develop students’ critical reading and writing skills developed in the intermediate school. Through the study of literary genres such as the short story, novel, drama, poetry, mythology and nonfiction, students sharpen recognition of various literary elements and devices. Emphasis in this course is placed on indepth reading and discussion as well as writing skills. Students use MLA format and The BIG6 information literacy model to conduct a problembased research project. Grammar, vocabulary, and reinforcement of listening, speaking and study skills are also addressed.

In this unit, students will read literature to study the plot, characters, conflict, and ultimately, the fictional story the author writes.

Every student is required to bring a three-ring binder dedicated to Spanish to EVERY class. They are expected to STUDY the class notes and vocabulary in this notebook on a regular basis.
