Ceramics I is an entry-level clay sculpting course.  In this class, students will learn the three basic hand-building techniques; coil pinch and slab building.  As the year continues and sculpting skills increase, the projects become more geared to the student's personality and self-expression.  They will be building artwork that can be used for a 3-D portfolio.  They will also have the opportunity to strengthen their problem-solving skills and work in a creative, nurturing environment.

• Deadlines/ Homework = 20% of overall grade

If you are absent, you will have extra time to work on your project outside the class beyond the deadline date. When the class moves on to a new project, we all move on together.  You are responsible for seeking "extra help" to finish projects or taking them home to finish.  

My "Extra Help" day is Wednesday during unit lunch.

Unit Lunch Extra Help is designed for working art students, not for social hours.  Please do not bring your entourage for extra help.

Course Overview

Ceramics II is an advanced-level clay sculpting class.  In this class, the students will be building on their skills from Ceramics I.  The students will learn more about behind-the-scenes how to run a ceramics studio.  They will be loading and unloading kilns, recycling clay, and making test tiles with glazes.  The students will also gain more artistic freedom as they will be studying modern ceramics artists.  It is important for students to see the vast possibilities that are available to them in the clay medium.

Syllabus 

Course Description

AP 3D Art and Design is a challenging and rigorous college-level course focused on the creation of a substantial body of original, high-quality three-dimensional artwork. The curriculum is designed to be equivalent to a first-year college art course in both content and expectations. Students are encouraged to push their creative boundaries while developing mastery of artistic concepts, technical skills, craftsmanship, and visual communication across a variety of 3D art media.

Success in AP 3D Art and Design requires a strong commitment from students, teachers, and the school community. The course follows the curriculum framework established by the College Board and emphasizes inquiry, experimentation, revision, and sustained artistic investigation. Students are expected to develop a cohesive portfolio that demonstrates growth, technical proficiency, and a thoughtful exploration of ideas.

Completion and submission of the AP Art and Design Portfolio to the College Board by the national deadline in early May is a required component of the course. Portfolios are evaluated by AP readers and may qualify students for college credit or advanced placement.

AP 3D Art and Design is a full-year course of study. While portfolios are submitted in May, coursework continues through the end of the academic year. Instruction and projects throughout the course align with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Visual and Performing Arts.

Supply List

Students will be provided with all standard art materials and supplies necessary to complete course assignments, including required summer work. These materials include general classroom supplies commonly used in sculpture and other three-dimensional art processes.

Students are responsible for obtaining any specialized, unconventional, or personally selected materials that fall outside the scope of standard classroom supplies. Examples may include found objects, recycled materials, specialty hardware, unique construction materials, or other nontraditional media incorporated into individual projects.

Students are encouraged to discuss proposed materials with the instructor to ensure they are appropriate for the classroom environment and course objectives.

Course Description

Unified Art is an inclusive, collaborative art course that brings together students of varying abilities to create, learn, and grow through the visual arts. The course is designed to foster creativity, communication, self-expression, and social connections in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Students will explore a variety of artistic media and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, and crafts. Through individual and group projects, students will develop artistic skills while building confidence, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives and talents.

The Unified Art classroom emphasizes cooperation, respect, and community. Students work together to support one another's creative growth while celebrating the unique strengths and contributions of every artist. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience success and meaningful participation.

Throughout the course, students will engage in hands-on artmaking, creative exploration, discussions about art and culture, and opportunities to showcase their work through classroom displays, school exhibitions, and community events. No prior art experience is required—only a willingness to participate, create, and collaborate.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of artwork, strengthened their creative confidence, and gained valuable social and communication skills that extend beyond the art room.
