Advanced Placement Latin

There is a new curriculum for AP Latin beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. 

The curriculum focuses on reading authentic Latin texts.  The readings will be divided into a prose reading list and a poetry reading list.  The prose reading list will include prescribed readings from the Epistulae of Pliny the Younger.  The remainder of the prose reading list may include teacher selected passages from various authors including but not limited to Tacitus, Julius Caesar, Livy, Suetonius, Sallust, Cornelius Nepos and Cicero.

The poetry prescribed readings are selections from the Aeneid of Vergil.  The remainder of the pose reading list will include passages from among Vergil, Catullus, Horace and Ovid.

The course is intended to prepare students to succeed on the annual AP Latin Exam.  

Latin 4 Honors is the final installment in acquiring the basic grammar, syntax and vocabulary for Latin.  The course will transition from adapted Latin readings to authentic Latin culminating in an introduction to Vergil's Aeneid.  If time allows, the class will also explore authentic Latin prose via passages from Caesar's de Bello Gallico.  As the students develop their language skills, the concomitant aspects of Roman culture and history will provide the spark for investigation to the legacy of Rome in our society.

Latin 3 Honors is a continuation in the acquisition and development the basic grammar, syntax and vocabulary skills in Latin.  The course will utilize adapted Latin readings with some purposefully selected authentic Latin passages.  The focus is on reading comprehension, understanding grammar and syntax and their parallels in English and acquiring fundamental vocabulary.  As the students develop their language skills, the concomitant aspects of Roman culture and history will provide the spark for investigation to the legacy of Rome and its language in our society.

Latin 3 CP is a continuation in the acquisition and development the basic grammar, syntax and vocabulary skills in Latin.  The course will utilize adapted Latin readings with some purposefully selected authentic Latin passages.  The focus is primarily on reading comprehension as well as developing an understanding of basic grammar and syntax and their parallels in English. Emphasis is placed on acquiring fundamental vocabulary and drawing connections to English derivations.  As the students develop their language skills, the concomitant aspects of Roman culture and history will provide the spark for investigation to the legacy of Rome and its language in our society.

Each class will have the necessary resources for that class posted on a Google classroom under a resources tab.  The Latin 3 and 4 classes will be issued text books.
